A Weitlaner Retractor is a self-retaining, handheld surgical instrument used to hold soft tissues apart during surgical procedures to give the surgeon access to the site. The retractor is self-retaining, meaning it remains in place once it is positioned, freeing your hands. The Weitlaner Retractor has two parallel blades with prongs, each with blunt or sharp, curved, and slightly tapered ends. The retractor has a ratchet locking mechanism to secure the blades with the desired spread. This mechanism enables easy adjustment of the retraction angle and provides stability during the procedure. The ring handles give you a firm, comfortable grip. These Weitlaner Retractors have 2 x 3 prong configuration, with 2 prongs on one blade and 3 on the other. They are 10.2 cm (4") long and can have a spread of 3 or 4 cm. They are manufactured from surgical grade stainless steel or premium German steel, both of which are autoclavable. WPI recommends properly cleaning all your surgical instruments promptly after use. This improves the useable lifespan of your surgical tools.

Once positioned and locked in place, a self-retaining retractor holds the tissues or structures in the desired position without requiring continuous attention. This frees your hands for other critical tasks during the procedure. By holding the tissues or organs away from the surgical site, a self-retaining retractor offers you enhanced visibility and greater access to the surgical site. The ratchet or locking mechanism in a self-retaining retractor ensures a consistent and controlled level of tissue retraction throughout the procedure. This stability helps maintain the exposure required for you to work effectively. Holding and retracting tissues manually for an extended period can lead to hand (and arm) fatigue. With a self-retaining retractor, you can avoid prolonged physical strain, as the retractor holds the tissues in place without continuous effort.
