The Knapp Speculum is a surgical instrument used by an ophthalmologist to hold the eyelids apart in order to examine the back of the eye or the retina, or to perform some surgeries. This handheld speculum has two wire blades that are inserted between the eyelids. The Knapp Speculum is named after the American ophthalmologist Herman Knapp who designed it in the late 1800s to ensure that the eye remains open and stable during procedures, making them easier and safer to perform. The wire blades or prongs are curved to better fit the contours of the eye. This eye speculum is adjustable for smaller and larger patients. This speculum is available in surgical grade stainless steel or our premium German steel. This eye speculum can be sterilized with a chemical sterilant or by autoclaving. Be sure to clean, disinfect and sterilize your surgical instruments promptly after each use to ensure they last for many years.
