This revolutionary new system, which uses dielectrophoresis (DEP), makes cellular manipulation easy. Standard micromanipulators are not well suited to this task, and systems used in the past have been extremely expensive. Now, WPI offers an affordable solution.

Using Cell Works

Living cells are naturally attracted to the charged electrode. So, you simply position the electrode and turn it on. The living cells are drawn to the tip. Single cells or groups of cells can be collected and moved to the desired position. Turn the electrode off when the cells are positioned.

For example, you can place the chosen cells near the tip of a pipette. When the electrode is turned off, the cells can be drawn into the pipette and transferred to a sterile petri dish.

Living cells are naturally attracted to the charged electrode tip. They can be moved and positioned, as desired. NOTE: For viewing purposes, the dead cells in the images are dyed with trypan blue.

You can sort the living cells automatically and collect a group of cells.

When the electrode is turned off, the cells can be drawn into the pipette.

Hybridoma

You can even use Cell Works to fuse two cells. Positining two cells so that they are touching and pulsing the electric field causes the cells to fuse into a single cell with two nuclei in less than one minute.

The Cell Works system includes:

  • Cell Works Unit
  • Capillary holder
  • Cable and foot switch

It can be set up in a couple of configurations, depending on your application.

Basic Setup - For trap and release of cells or automatic sorting of viable cells in the same petri dish, add an inverted microcope and a micromanipulator. This system can be installed on any microscope

Advanced Setup - For collection of cells to be withdrawn and cultured in another petri dish, add an inverted microscope, two micromanipulators and an injector.
